as Anima approaches her mane is on fire she pulls me deep within I can't contain my desire I see my reflection on the black mirrored screen a vision so lucid I swear I was dreaming of us... What’s Lost in Lust?
Often, when we work on a piece of new music the starting point is an image, an atmosphere, an imaginal scene from which we begin to create a soundtrack.
This was perhaps the most vivid with the writing of Winter’s Truth.
I had been carrying the fairytale piano melody with me for years, like a dream half forgotten. Then one Winters eve, somewhere in the surreality of the second lockdown in 2020, Inspiration ignited us and a whole song branched out of Ebony’s voice singing over the hypnotic piano…
The song we were left with is no doubt one of my favourite pieces in the LUH repertoire- A song full of mysterious symbols that feel like true emergent expressions of the unconscious.
Initially we began envisioning a short film around the bard-core caricatures that populated our inner landscape, & perhaps in an ideal world we would have thousands to invest in crafting a music video that played out the narratives; we could picture the scenes so clearly in our minds.
However, self funding and self releasing this record inevitably comes with limitations, and we made the decision rather than shooting individual music videos it would be interesting to invest in capturing us playing songs from the album as a live film, as there was very little good footage of us playing together as a band available.
If you’ve missed them, we have released a couple of these performances so far, Dark Days, The Return and now Winter’s Truth.
And over time I am coming into a deeper appreciation a lot of the true beauty of music as an art form is what happens in the imagination.
I feel there is a certain flattening of our imaginative capacity when our wildest dreams are a click away gyrating in hyper reality on our black mirrored screens.
Indeed it is the potent space between images where the true magic lays… this is a thought that has been haunting me for the past few months, it feels a potent seam to dig into…
All this said, I will leave you with a sequence of images that we had collected as inspiration for a visual to Winter’s Truth, perhaps you can look over them, then put on the song and let its symbols come to life inside you…
